A Theology of Violence: An Analysis of Selected Surahs from the Qur’an

Published as Theologie der Gewalt. Eine Analyse ausgewählter Suren aus dem Koran (Münster: Waxmann, 2026), this book by Hamideh Mohagheghi is the published version of her doctoral thesis (defended in 2019) on the relationship between the Qur’an and violence.

Faith and violence: a theme that challenges many religions, whose revealed texts contain narratives carrying a significant potential for violence. The author examines how violence is addressed in scripture, focusing on two Qur’anic surahs, which she rereads in a historicising and contextualising way, in dialogue with the classical exegetical tradition (tafsīr) and contemporary Qur’anic scholarship.

A contribution to the reflection on violence narratives in sacred texts and their responsible interpretation in a contemporary context.
