The Word of God and the Qur’an: On the Reflections of Claude Geffré
Published in the Revue des sciences philosophiques et théologiques (vol. 110, 2026/1, pp. 197-213), this article by Tobias Specker examines the Christian theology of Islam developed by the Dominican Claude Geffré (1926-2017), professor at the Institut Catholique de Paris.
Drawing on Geffré’s involvement in the Islamic-Christian Research Group (GRIC) and his later writings, the article shows how he reads the Qur’an within a theology of the Word of God. Geffré identifies structural analogies in the understanding of Revelation while stressing the differences, and comes to conceive of the Qur’an as, in a certain sense, the Word of God.
Specker discusses this perspective and its implications for a Christian theology in dialogue with Islam.
