Muhammad in Modern Art, by Alice Bombardier

Lecture given by Alice Bombardier (Professeure agrégée at Sorbonne Université) as part of the Théologies en dialogue Chair of the Faculty of Theology at UCLy, in Lyon, on 25 March 2026.

Working against the grain of a historiography of the “rarity” of representations of the Prophet, the speaker documents the diversification of prophetic figuration in contemporary visual arts from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The lecture examines the tensions with puritan movements (notably Saudi ones) and the wave of Iranian artistic responses after 2006, which restore the image of the Prophet.
