A Swiss Centre for Islam and Society certificate to train chaplains in Muslim spiritual care in public institutions

From January to November 2027, the Swiss Centre for Islam and Society (SCIS) at the University of Fribourg, a partner institution of Pluriel, will offer the third edition of its Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) “Practising Muslim Spiritual Care in Public Institutions”, in French-speaking Switzerland.

Spread across eight modules and sixteen in-person days, this certifying programme enables participants to become familiar with approaches to chaplaincy in a secular and pluralist context, as well as the requirements of spiritual care within public institutions (hospitals, prisons, federal asylum centres, the army). The originality of this unique training lies in encouraging critical thinking drawing on Islamic sources and Islamic-theological reflection, through an interdisciplinary approach applied to the Swiss context.

  • Learn about current concepts of chaplaincy and their application to Muslim chaplaincy
  • Acquire knowledge in Islamic theology relevant to the practice of chaplaincy
  • Develop interviewing and counselling skills in chaplaincy
  • Gain reflexivity on the diversity of expressions of faith and their implications for spiritual care

The programme is aimed at imams and Muslim chaplains already active in the field, people wishing to enter this field, and staff of public administrations and institutions involved in questions of religious diversity. The application deadline is 7 September 2026.
