Two Seas, One Course: The 2026 Jesuit Migrant Service Report on Spain’s Southern Border
The annual report of the Jesuit Migrant Service (SJM), the social apostolate body of the Society of Jesus in Spain, written by Josep (Pep) Buades Fuster, examines the migratory dynamics of Spain’s “southern border”: the Atlantic route, towards the Canary Islands, and the western Mediterranean route.
In 2025, Spain recorded 36,775 irregular entries, one of the lowest figures since the reactivation of the Atlantic route in 2020. The report highlights the influence of weather conditions on the routes, the tightening of controls along the Atlantic coast (Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia), the sharp rise in departures from the Algerian coast, and the emergence of Ceuta as the main entry point into Spain. The main nationalities vary by route: Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Morocco and Gambia on the Atlantic route; Algeria, Morocco, Somalia, Mali and Guinea in the Mediterranean.
Around three verbs, to accompany, to serve and to defend, the SJM pursues an ecclesial vocation: strategic litigation (protecting migrant children from online hate speech, challenging summary pushbacks in Ceuta and from the Chafarinas Islands) and the coordination of the Atlantic Ecclesial Network of Hospitality, which brings together the Catholic Church’s presence along the migratory route.
Since the migrants largely come from Muslim-majority countries, this report sheds light on the concrete context of the encounter between Christians and Muslims in Europe.

Rapport annuel du Service jésuite des migrants (SJM), organisme de l’apostolat social de la Compagnie de Jésus en Espagne, ce document rédigé par Josep (Pep) Buades Fuster examine les dynamiques migratoires de la « frontière sud » de l’Espagne : la route atlantique, vers les îles Canaries, et la route méditerranéenne occidentale.
En 2025, l’Espagne a enregistré 36 775 entrées irrégulières, l’un des chiffres les plus bas depuis la réactivation de la route atlantique en 2020. Le rapport souligne le poids des conditions météorologiques sur l’activation des routes, le renforcement des contrôles le long de la côte atlantique (Maroc, Mauritanie, Sénégal, Gambie), la forte hausse des départs depuis les côtes algériennes et la transformation de Ceuta en principale porte d’entrée. Les nationalités dominantes varient selon les routes : Sénégal, Mali, Guinée, Maroc et Gambie sur la route atlantique ; Algérie, Maroc, Somalie, Mali et Guinée en Méditerranée.
Autour de trois verbes, accompagner, servir et défendre, le SJM déploie une vocation ecclésiale : un travail de contentieux stratégique (protection de l’enfance migrante face aux discours de haine en ligne, contestation des refoulements sommaires à Ceuta et depuis les îles Chafarines) et l’animation du Réseau ecclésial d’hospitalité atlantique, qui fédère la présence de l’Église catholique le long de la route migratoire.
Les personnes migrantes étant en grande partie originaires de pays à majorité musulmane, ce rapport éclaire le contexte concret de la rencontre entre chrétiens et musulmans en Europe.

إنّ هذا التقريرَ السنويّ، الذي أصدرته الخدمة اليسوعيّة للمهاجرين (SJM) — الهيئةَ الاجتماعيّةَ للرهبنة اليسوعيّة بإسبانيا — بقلم خوسيه (بيب) بواديس فوستر، يدرس ديناميات الهجرة على « الحدود الجنوبية » لإسبانيا: الطريق الأطلسي نحو جزر الكناري، وطريق غرب المتوسط.
في عام 2025 سجّلت إسبانيا 36 775 دخولًا غير نظامي، وهو من أدنى الأرقام منذ إعادة تنشيط الطريق الأطلسي عام 2020. ويبرز التقرير تأثير الأحوال الجوية في تنشيط الطرق، وتشديد الرقابة على طول الساحل الأطلسي (المغرب وموريتانيا والسنغال وغامبيا)، والارتفاع الكبير في الانطلاقات من السواحل الجزائرية، ولا سيّما تحوّل سبتة إلى المعبر الرئيسيّ للدخول إلى إسبانيا. أمّا الجنسيّات الغالبة فتتباين بحسب الطريق: السنغال ومالي وغينيا والمغرب وغامبيا على الطريق الأطلسي؛ والجزائر والمغرب والصومال ومالي وغينيا في المتوسط.
ومن خلال ثلاثة أفعال — المرافقة والخدمة والدفاع — تُبلور الخدمةُ اليسوعيّة للمهاجرين رسالةً كنسيّة: من عملٍ تقاضٍ استراتيجيّ (حماية الأطفال المهاجرين من خطاب الكراهية على الإنترنت، والطعن في عمليّات الإعادة الفوريّة في سبتة ومن جزر الشفارين)، إلى تنشيط الشبكة الكنسيّة للضيافة الأطلسيّة، تلك التي تجمع حضور الكنيسة الكاثوليكيّة على طول طريق الهجرة.
ولمّا كان المهاجرون في غالبيتهم من بلدان ذات أغلبية مسلمة، فإن هذا التقرير يضيء السياق الملموس للقاء بين المسيحيين والمسلمين في أوروبا.
