Ahmed el-Basyouni
Born in Egypt, Ahmed el-Basyouni is a PhD candidate in law at the Maurer School of Law, Indiana University Bloomington (United States), where he was a 2024-2025 PhD Fellow of the Center for Constitutional Democracy. His research focuses on comparative constitutional law, democracy and the rule of law, in particular on “militant democracy” and the exclusion of political or religious actors who reject democratic values. He holds an LLM in comparative constitutional law from Central European University, with a thesis on judicial review after the Arab Spring. He previously served as a parliamentary staffer to an Egyptian member of parliament (2018-2020), working on constitutional rights and judicial reform. He took part in the summer school “Citizenship and Religious Pluralism” organised in July 2025 by the Anawati Chair at the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO, Cairo), and is a member of the Pluriel research group “Citizenship and Religious Pluralism” that emerged from it.
