Gianluca Parolin
Gianluca Parolin holds a doctorate in public law from the University of Turin and is Professor of Law at the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations at the Aga Khan University in London, where he directs the Governance Programme. He specializes in constitutional law, the relationship between Islam and the state, citizenship, and the imaginary of justice and law in Egyptian television series.
His research interests focus mainly on the Middle East and North Africa. In the field of comparative law, his current research focuses on semiotic transformations of law and legal epistemology.
He previously worked on the post-2011 Arab new constitution movements, institutional design and the unintended consequences of constitutions in the Gulf countries.
From 2008 to 2015, he taught at the American University in Cairo and Cairo University. In recent years, he has held visiting positions in Beirut, Leiden, Naples, New York, Rome, Tokyo, Trento, and Zurich.
His first monograph was published in 2009: Citizenship in the Arab World: Kin, Religion and Nation-State (AUP, Amsterdam).
In 2018, he was invited to deliver a keynote adress at the Pluriel Congress in Rome. The keynote was titled “The Jinsiyya Obsession and the Muwatana veil: The Constitutional Politics on Citizenship in the 21st Century”.
