Violaine Lemay
Violaine Lemay is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal (UdeM), in Quebec, and has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1991. She is a regular researcher at the UdeM’s Centre for Public Law Research (CRDP) and co-founder of the Research Centre on Interdisciplinarity and Interculturality (CRII).
Her research addresses the epistemology and methodology of legal scholarship, the interface between law and society, the right to equality and the protection of vulnerable groups (youth law, minority rights), as well as global health and personalised medicine. She holds a doctorate in law from the UdeM (2005), completed under the supervision of the sociologist Guy Rocher, and has developed the theory of “interdisciplinarity as interculturality”: the dialogue between disciplinary cultures and between heterogeneous systems of knowledge. She co-edited with Frédéric Darbellay L’interdisciplinarité racontée. Chercher hors frontières, vivre l’interculturalité (Peter Lang, 2014) and authored the bestseller Évaluation scolaire et justice sociale (2000). She was a driving force behind the Libreville Declaration (2022) on the equal intellectual dignity of the world’s knowledge systems, notably in support of the epistemological autonomy of African knowledge traditions.
At the UdeM, she convenes the doctoral seminar “Legal Methodology and Interdisciplinarity” (DRT 7002) and has directed the interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Applied Human Sciences (SHA). She founded and continues to scientifically direct two pedagogical journals, Les Chantiers de la recherche en droit and Les Chantiers de l’intervention en sciences humaines. She has also served as francophone editor of the Canadian Journal of Law and Society and heads the legal and interdisciplinary studies of the HYGEIA Observatory. She has received the UdeM Award for Excellence in Teaching (2008) and the ACFAS Prize for Pedagogical Innovation (2015).
She joins Pluriel’s “Interreligious Dialogue Assisted by Artificial Intelligence” research group, to which she brings her expertise in critical epistemology and the methodology of interdisciplinarity, drawing in particular on her supervision of doctoral work on artificial intelligence applied to personalised medicine. Her theorisation of dialogue between heterogeneous epistemic cultures provides a methodological framework directly transferable to the governance of projects that combine artificial intelligence with interreligious dialogue.
