The Lebanese historian Georges Corm has passed away

Passing away. Historian Georges Corm, who had given a lecture at the first Pluriel congress, died in Beirut on August 14, 2024.

Invited to give a lecture at the first Pluriel congress in Lyon on September 7, 2016, Georges Corm criticized the instrumentalization of religion in geopolitical conflicts. He rejected the “clash of civilizations” theory and denounced the excessive focus on Islam. He also traced the emergence of the discourse on the “return of religion” and its strategic use.

Corm called for a “moratorium on religious discussions” and a return to universal international law. He urged condemning the exploitation of religions and focusing on the true causes of terrorism, particularly poverty and unemployment in the Arab world.

Disparition.
