Dār al-islām and dār al-ḥarb in contemporary Muslim thought

The purpose of the proposed paper is to question the division of the world into dār al-islām (land of Islam) and dār al-ḥarb (land of war), which is a classification introduced by Muslim jurisconsults in the early centuries of Islam. However, the precise definition of these categories has been variously interpreted in the course of Muslim history and has produced effects on legal debates, specifically about the relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.
In my paper, I intend to explore the writings of contemporary Muslim thinkers on the issues at stake in the division of the world into land of Islam and land of war, and to analyse the re-reading they offer of these two concepts. Does the modern state render these concepts obsolete? How do Islamic thinkers position themselves on this issue?

Lecture given at the 3rd international congress of the PLURIEL network, from 23 to 27 May 2022 in Beirut.
In partnership with Saint Joseph University of Beirut and La Sagesse University.
