Islam and Muslims. Doctrines, Schools of Thought, and Current Trends

Publication date: April 16, 2026.

Islam, as a historical, religious, and civilizational reality, is difficult to define. It can be perceived as a form of political governance, an expression of faith, a social conception with regulatory practices, or as a civilizational and cultural heritage. From its emergence and throughout its history, Islam has transformed the way these realities are inhabited. This makes it impossible to speak of it as a monolithic reality. Islam is, in fact, plural.

To account for these profound mutations, the first part of this book analyzes transmission in the Muslim world. The recent encounter with modernity raises new questions and accentuates certain trends. The second part revisits the place of the Quran and the debates surrounding its status. The third addresses schools of thought and the authority of certain key figures. The final part brings together reflections on extremism perpetrated in the name of Islam. The rise of fundamentalism, and in particular violent acts, raises the question of its roots. The analysis aims to decipher the role of literalism in the fabrication of radicality.

A way to approach with clarity the depth of a phenomenon as complex as it is multiform.

Professor of theology and Islamic studies at the Catholic University of Lyon, Michel Younès is the dean of the Faculty of Theology and the general coordinator of the international research platform on Islam, PLURIEL. He has published and edited several works on Islam and Christian-Muslim relations, including Les approches chrétiennes de l’islam.
