Conference / Religious authority in Islam

Conference organised by the Centre d’études des cultures et des religions (UCLy, Lyon) on 18 and 19 November 2021

Presentation

Being a repository of authority or being recognised as a place of authority is not a simple process. This is especially true since in the Sunni Muslim tradition, the absence of a designation by the Prophet of Islam of an institution willing to regulate the religious question will open the way to a plurality of modalities that may be theological or theological-political in nature. In a globalized context where the impact of religious discourse takes various forms, the legitimisation of a religious authority can be confused with the number of number of followers or subscribers to a YouTube-type channel.

The main question concerns the determination of the process of legitimisation of a religious authority in Islam, especially in the contemporary European landscape. What is the place of the current structures in their diversity? What impact do extra-European leaders have? What is happening to the traditional representants of authority? These are the types of questions that the symposium seeks to answer.
