Charbel Attallah

PhD holder

Born in Lebanon in 1985, Charbel Attallah was ordained a priest in 2010 for the Maronite diocese of Baalbeck-Deir el-Ahmar in Lebanon. He is the leader of a Christian-Muslim dialogue group and deputy director of the diocesan school whose students are mostly Muslim.

In 2009, he obtained a degree in theology and philosophy at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik-Lebanon. From 2012 to 2015, he was a student priest in France in Levallois-Perret, a suburb of Paris. He became curate in the diocese of Pontoise and then founded the Maronite parish of Saint-Maroun in the Val d’Oise.

In 2015 he obtained a canonical licence in dogmatic theology from the Catholic Institute of Paris. After the Paris attacks in 2015, the town of Bessancourt awarded him the town medal for his inter-religious commitment. Bilingual in Arabic and French, he teaches Arabic at the Faculty of Letters of the Catholic Institute of Paris from 2017 to 2019.

In 2025, he defended a doctoral thesis in Religious Studies at the École pratique des hautes études, supervised by Pierre Lory, entitled “The Notion of Mystical Love in Abū Tālib al-Makkī and Its Central Role in His Work Qūt al-qulūb”.

Since 2020, he has been a lecturer and director of the “Islam” axis at the Institut des Sciences et Théologies des Religions (ISTR) of the Institut catholique de Paris, and responsible for the Institute’s partnerships with the Muslim world. He participates in the organisation of meetings in the framework of the Groupe d’amitié islamo-chrétienne and the association Ensemble avec Marie.
