“The Reception of Rūmī’s Work in France: Cultural Mediations, Symbolic Transfers and the Recomposition of Belief”, by Khalid El Khadiri

In the journal La Clé des Langues (ENS de Lyon, March 2026), Khalid El Khadiri, a PhD candidate in the history and sociology of religions at the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE), examines the contemporary reception in France of the work of the Persian poet and mystic Ǧalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (1207-1273).

Combining cultural history, the sociology of religion and the study of Sufism, he shows how Rūmī’s work, carried far beyond Islamic studies and Sufi-order circles, undergoes a symbolic reconfiguration: translations, aesthetic devices and spiritual mediators tend to universalise a “contemporary Rūmī”, partly detached from his Islamic and Sufi roots. Through this case, the article sheds light on the current recompositions of belief in secularised societies.
