School Chaplaincy amid Religious Diversity: Christian and Muslim Approaches in Dialogue

On Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October 2026, the school chaplaincy working group of the Centre for Comparative Theology and Cultural Studies (ZeKK) at Paderborn University, a partner institution of Pluriel, is holding a conference in Dortmund entitled Schulseelsorge in religiöser Vielfalt – christliche und muslimische Ansätze im Dialog. Presented as the first academic conference in Germany to bring together interreligious perspectives on school chaplaincy systematically, it puts Christian and Muslim approaches to spiritual care in education into dialogue.

In schools shaped by a diversity of worldviews, cultures and religions, school chaplaincy is gaining importance, both in its spiritual dimension and in its counselling and support functions. Alongside well-established Christian provision, fully developed models such as Muslim school chaplaincy are emerging, a field that research has so far barely explored.

Topics include:

  • the theological foundations of school chaplaincy from Christian and Muslim perspectives;
  • the pastoral care skills of religious education teachers;
  • the challenges that growing up in a diverse society poses for school chaplaincy;
  • the training of school chaplains, drawing on practitioners’ experience;
  • school chaplaincy in Austria from Protestant and Muslim perspectives;
  • models of chaplaincy in higher education.

The conference is directed by Gülbahar Erdem, Naciye Kamçılı-Yıldız, Marion Keuchen and Deborah Praus (Paderborn University). It brings together some twenty speakers, academics and teachers of Islamic, Protestant and Catholic religious education, including Angela Kaupp (University of Koblenz), Tanja Gojny (University of Wuppertal), Bacem Dziri (Humboldt University of Berlin) and Carla Amina Baghajati (Islamic Religious Community in Austria, Vienna). It is aimed at researchers in Christian and Islamic theology, religious studies and education, as well as religious education teachers and all those involved in school chaplaincy.

  • les fondements théologiques de l’aumônerie scolaire dans les perspectives chrétienne et musulmane ;
  • les compétences d’accompagnement des enseignants de religion ;
  • les défis que pose à l’aumônerie scolaire une jeunesse qui grandit dans une société plurielle ;
  • la formation des aumôniers scolaires, à partir de l’expérience de praticiens ;
  • la pratique de l’aumônerie scolaire en Autriche, du point de vue protestant et musulman ;
