“In the republican context, freedom of expression involves all the players in society and mobilises a wide range of intellectual resources. What then are the conditions that foster it while respecting plural convictions, including that of atheism? Can the historical depth of French culture and the French state, whose traditional foundations have been shaken by the arrival of other religious forms, give rise to other ethical references so that freedom of expression can enhance religious freedom? The reflections of authors from different disciplines on this delicate and tense subject show how the relationship between freedom of expression and religious freedom is interwoven and interdependent. The result is a fruitful debate, to which this book is intended to bear witness. The richness and subtleties that are brought to light invite readers to continue their reflection wherever they are.
