The civilizational vocation of Islam in the work of Malek Bennabi

This is an injunction for Muslim society to make history. Rather little recognised in his time and still largely unknown today, the Algerian intellectual Malek Bennabi (1905-1973) nevertheless made a remarkable entry into intellectual life in Algeria with his notion of “colonisability” in 1949. He then made himself known in the Muslim world, particularly with his functional definitions of culture and civilisation. Nevertheless, its reformist conception of religion, known as the “religious idea” and having a social function, has been very little analysed. Yet it is the keystone to understanding Bennabi’s thinking. For him, the “religious idea” must be an idea lived as a “working truth”, authentic with Islam and effective in the modern world. He mixes knowledge from both the Muslim Tradition and the human sciences and proposes to connect authentic Islam with the Cartesian technical spirit. Thus, in a context of decolonisation, Bennabi wants to realise, through the moral and social deployment of the “religious idea”, a project for a perennial and prosperous society open to human civilisation. By means of this notion of “religious idea”, we propose in this study to analyse the civilisational vocation that Bennabi gives to Islam. This book is intended to be an in-depth introduction to the life and thought of Malek Bennabi. It is also a new angle of analysis proposed to studies on contemporary Islamic thought and Islamology through the little-known gaze of an actor of contemporary Islam in the twentieth century.
