Full lecture title : ‘The representation of non-Islamist Muslims in Sunni Islamist discourse: an intra-religious otherness?’
In what ways do non-Brother Muslims (especially secular, liberal and modernist ones) represent an otherness for the Muslim Brotherhood? What is the discursive ethos of the Muslim Brotherhood in relation to Muslims who have departed from the Brotherhood’s version of Islam? Why do these non-Brother Muslims represent an otherness for the Muslim Brotherhood? Are they full Muslims or entirely separate? What is the role of this intra-religious otherness in the identity construction of the Muslim Brotherhood? Is the Brotherhood’s conception of this intra-religious otherness dichotomous in the founding texts of the Muslim Brotherhood?
This paper aims to answer these questions in order to explore the conceptualisation of this intra-religious otherness, which is almost absent in the literature, through a content analysis of the founding texts produced by theorists of Brotherhood Islamism.
Lecture given at the 3rd International Congress of the PLURIEL network, 23-27 May 2022 in Beirut.
In partnership with Saint Joseph University of Beirut and La Sagesse University.
