Mounia Ait Kabboura

Born in 1972, Mounia Ait Kabboura has been an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Contemporary Religious Studies (CERC) at the University of Sherbrooke since 2022 and Principal Researcher at the Centre of Expertise and Training on Religious Fundamentalism, Political Ideologies and Radicalization (CEFIR) since 2023. She holds a PhD in Philosophy obtained in 2019 under the supervision of Josiane Boulad-Ayoub (UQAM) and Chérif Ferjani (University Lyon 2), with a thesis on “The Ontological Foundations of Islamic Radicalism in Sayyid Qutb’s Thought.”

Her research focuses on contemporary Islam, Islamist movements, Islamic political theology, and radicalization prevention. She has completed several prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, notably at CERC (2021-2022), CELAT (2020-2021), and the Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill University (2018-2020).

Among her recent publications, she published “The Marx of Islam. Sayyid Qutb. Genealogy of Radical Islamism” (PUM, 2021) and co-edited “Allah and the Polis. Which Islam for Which Identity?” (PUM, 2021). Her work has been published in recognized academic journals, and she regularly contributes to public debates on Islam, secularism, and living together in Quebec.

Mounia Ait Kabboura is very active in organizing symposiums and conferences, particularly CEFIR’s discussion forums on democracy and living together. She is a member of several scholarly associations, including the Canadian Theological Society, and serves on various scientific and editorial committees.
