Dans les débats sociaux et politiques, il est souvent question d’une relation directe entre la religion et la violence, qui vise à désigner la religion comme cause de la violence. Les sources des religions monothéistes du judaïsme, du christianisme et de l’islam contiennent un potentiel de violence qui a été instrumentalisé à maintes reprises par leurs partisans. Nous pouvons comprendre ces sources si nous ne traitons pas leurs expressions d’après notre mode de pensée contemporain, mais si nous essayons de les appréhender du point de vue de leur contexte d’origine. Dans ce livre, des théologiens chrétiens et musulmans abordent la question de la violence dans la Bible et dans le Coran. Les problèmes sont abordés à l’aide d’exemples textuels et de modes d’accès hermétiques, et les moyens de compréhension et d’interprétation sont mis en débats.

في النقاشات الاجتماعية والسياسية، تظهرُ في الغالب علاقةٌ مباشرة تربطُ الدينَ بالعنف وتهدفُ إلى تصنيفِ الدين كسبب العنف. وتحتوي مصادر الأديان التوحيدية في اليهودية والمسيحية والإسلام على إمكانية العنف التي كثيرا ما استغلها مؤيدو الأديان. يمكننا أن نفهمَ هذه المصادر إذا حاولنا أن نقاربَها ونستوعبَها في سياقها الأصلي لا أن نعالجَ نصوصها وفقًا لطريقة تفكيرنا المعاصرة. في هذا الكتاب، يعالجُ لاهتيّون مسيحيّون وعلماء دراسات إسلاميّة مسألة العنفِ في الكتاب المقدّس وفي القرآن. وسيقاربون المشاكل من خلال نماذج نصوص وطرائق نقاش مُحكمة ثم سيناقشون أساليب الفهم والتفسير.
