The author retraces the development of Islam in the Sahel and its impact on Muslim women from the 8th to the 16th century, in order to shed light on how contemporary Islamism is rooted in a long regional history. Her conclusion is unambiguous: the threat of female extremism and radicalisation in the Sahel can only be countered by addressing its deep historical roots, social, educational and economic, which have durably disadvantaged women compared to men.
The chapter is part of a volume that interrogates the categories used to designate radical Islamic movements (Salafism, Jihadism, Islamic terrorism) and proposes to move beyond the terminological ambiguities that currently dominate the field.

L’autrice retrace le développement de l’islam au Sahel et son impact sur les femmes musulmanes du VIIIᵉ au XVIᵉ siècle, pour éclairer la manière dont l’islamisme contemporain s’enracine dans une longue histoire régionale. Sa conclusion est nette : la menace de l’extrémisme et de la radicalisation féminine au Sahel ne peut être contrée qu’en s’attaquant à ses racines historiques profondes, sociales, éducatives et économiques, qui ont durablement défavorisé les femmes par rapport aux hommes.
Le chapitre s’inscrit dans un volume qui interroge les catégories utilisées pour désigner les mouvements islamiques radicaux (salafisme, jihadisme, terrorisme islamique) et propose de sortir des ambiguïtés terminologiques dominantes.

تتتبّع المؤلّفة تطوّر الإسلام في منطقة الساحل الأفريقي وأثره في المسلمات ما بين القرنَين الثامن والسادس عشر، مضيئةً على كيفية تجذُّر الإسلاموية المعاصرة في تاريخ إقليمي طويل. وخلاصتها واضحة: لا يمكن التصدّي لخطر التطرّف والتّجنيد النسائي في الساحل إلا بمعالجة جذوره التاريخية العميقة، الاجتماعية والتعليمية والاقتصادية، التي حرمت المرأة تاريخياً بالمقارنة مع الرجل.
ويندرج هذا الفصل ضمن كتاب يسائل الفئات المستعملة لتوصيف الحركات الإسلامية الراديكالية (السلفية، الجهادية، الإرهاب الإسلامي) ويقترح تجاوز الالتباسات المصطلحية الغالبة في هذا الحقل.
