Mercy, a new opportunity for dialogue between Muslims and Christians
Abstract
The common concept of mercy needs a clarification in its meaning for Christians and Muslims. This article delves into the term raḥma with which the Qur’an refers to Allah and its possible links with the Christian tradition, which allows a new approach between islam and christianity. The text highlights the importance of the theology of the names of God in the Islamic theological thought, in which the relevance of two attributes is discovered: Ar-Raḥmân (the Clement) and Ar-Raḥîm (the Merciful). These ground terms are the basis for a “new Islamic theology”, which can have significant consequences in the configuration of current Islam and its relations with the Western world.
