“Islamic Sciences in Dialogue: Azharian Tradition and Critical Islamic Studies”
The Institut français d’islamologie (IFI) and the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) are organising their 2026 Summer School in Islamic Studies, hosted at IDEO in Cairo from 13 to 26 July 2026, on the theme “Islamic Sciences in Dialogue: Azharian Tradition and Critical Islamic Studies”.
A training between tradition and critique
Hosted at IDEO, this summer school offers French-speaking doctoral students in Islamic studies a twelve-day immersion in the main disciplines of the Islamic sciences: Quranic exegesis, hadith, kalām, uṣūl al-fiqh, Islamic philosophy (falsafa) and Sufism (taṣawwuf). What sets the programme apart is its twofold pedagogical approach: courses delivered in Arabic within the living Azharian tradition, combined with the critical and methodological rigour of academic Islamic studies. Participants thus engage directly with the ways in which these sciences remain vibrant in present-day Egypt.
A programme structured around five dimensions
Teaching, at five hours per day, is organised along five complementary axes. Lectures in Arabic, jointly delivered by teachers from al-Azhar and Francophone scholars of Islamic studies, introduce the theoretical and historical foundations of each discipline. Guided readings then explore representative texts, with particular attention to the emergence of concepts and the evolution of their meanings. Research workshops in French, held over three half-days, offer doctoral students a space to present the progress of their work and to engage with their peers — including Egyptian students enrolled in the Cairo certificate in Islamic studies methodology. A day devoted to codicology, led by a specialist in Arabic manuscripts, introduces participants to methods of material analysis and to the latest digital tools, notably artificial intelligence applied to manuscripts. Finally, cultural visits (mosques, madrasas, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts) anchor the programme in the living heritage of Islamic Cairo.
Audience and organisation
The Summer School is designed for Francophone doctoral students (minimum B1 level in French and Arabic), enrolled in Islamic studies or a related discipline. The number of participants is deliberately capped at twelve in order to preserve the quality of pedagogical exchanges. The programme covers international flights, accommodation in a three-star hotel on Zamalek Island, midday meals, local transport, and cultural visits. A flat participation fee of 380 euros is required from selected candidates to confirm their registration.
Selection for the 2026 edition is closed. For information about future sessions, please contact Emmanuel Pisani, Director of IDEO: direction@ideo-cairo.org.
