24 October 2026 to 31 October 2026
“Mostra coranica. La Venezia delle religioni”: from Marracci’s Qur’an to Christian-Muslim Dialogue
From Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October 2026, the cloister of the convent of San Francesco della Vigna in Venice hosts the Mostra coranica. La Venezia delle religioni, an exhibition open to the public, together with two round tables on relations between Islam and Christianity, the Muslim presence in Venice and interreligious dialogue as an instrument of peace. The initiative brings together the Fondazione Venezia per la Ricerca sulla Pace, the Department of Asian and North African Studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the Friars Minor of San Francesco della Vigna and the Coranica project.
The exhibition is based on “Coranica”, designed by the Fondazione Metamorfosi with the Office for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue of the Archdiocese of Lucca and shown in Lucca in March 2026. It starts from the complete Latin translation of the Qur’an published in Padua in 1698 by the Lucca-born theologian and orientalist Ludovico Marracci, the Alcorani textus universus, and traces the path of dialogue between Christianity and Islam up to the Document on Human Fraternity signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayyeb. The choice of a Franciscan convent recalls the thirteenth-century encounter between Francis of Assisi and Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil.
Round tables, in the convent library:
- Saturday 24 October, 10:00–11:30 am: presentation of the Coranica project (Luisa Locorotondo, Fondazione Metamorfosi and Archdiocese of Lucca); “Franciscan memory: Francis and the Sultan” (Giuseppe Buffon, Rector of the Pontifical University Antonianum); “Dialogue according to the Qur’an” (Ida Zilio-Grandi, Ca’ Foscari University); “Interreligious dialogue as an instrument of peace”, a conversation between Marco Dal Corso (Institute of Ecumenical Studies, Venice) and Yahya Abd al-Ahad Zanolo (Italian Islamic Religious Community, COREIS); followed by a guided tour of the exhibition, 11:30 am–12:30 pm;
- Saturday 31 October, 11:00 am–12:30 pm, after a guided tour from 10:00 to 11:00 am: “Being Muslim in Venice today” (Hammad Al-Muhammad, Muslim community of Marghera); “Dialogue between the Christian and Muslim communities in Venice” (Fr Nandino Capovilla, Christian community of Marghera); “The right to one’s cultural identity and religious freedom in Italy today” (Alessandro Ferrari, University of Insubria, a partner institution of Pluriel); contribution from public institutions and closing remarks by Luisa Locorotondo.
- Exhibition: 24–31 October 2026, 10:00 am–5:00 pm, cloister of the convent of San Francesco della Vigna, Campo San Francesco, Castello 2786, Venice;
- Round tables: Saturdays 24 and 31 October, convent library;
- Language: Italian;
- Admission: free for the exhibition and the talks; groups are asked to book via Eventbrite;

- samedi 24 octobre, de 10h à 11h30 : présentation du projet Coranica (Luisa Locorotondo, Fondazione Metamorfosi et archidiocèse de Lucques) ; « Mémoire franciscaine : François et le sultan » (Giuseppe Buffon, recteur de l’Université pontificale Antonianum) ; « Le dialogue selon le Coran » (Ida Zilio-Grandi, Université Ca’ Foscari) ; « Le dialogue interreligieux comme instrument de paix », échange à deux voix entre Marco Dal Corso (Institut d’études œcuméniques de Venise) et Yahya Abd al-Ahad Zanolo (Communauté religieuse islamique italienne, COREIS) ; puis visite guidée de l’exposition, de 11h30 à 12h30 ;
