God Is with Us: How Islam and Judaism Justify Violence

Long before October 7, 2023—and even more so since—certain politicized strands of Judaism and Islam have been creating conditions that legitimize, escalate, and sacralize violence in God’s name.

In this courageous book, the author dares to confront the theological-political rhetoric articulated on both sides—Palestinian and Israeli—that constructs narratives of death. To justify them, violence and counterviolence are recast as “the right to resist” or “the right to self-defense.”

However, this contemporary history cannot overlook the lessons of the longue durée, nor the pacifist—or otherwise—positions adopted by some Muslim and Jewish community organizations in France, home to Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish populations.

Bien avant le 7 octobre 2023 et évidemment bien davantage après, un certain judaïsme et un certain islam politisés ont créé et créent les conditions de légitimation, de surenchère et de sacralisation de la violence au nom de Dieu.

L’auteur ose affronter dans un ouvrage courageux ce qui s’énonce, dans une veine théologico-politique, chez les uns (Palestiniens) comme chez les autres (Israéliens) pour construire les discours de mort. Les violences et les contre-violences sont, pour les justifier, rebaptisées tantôt en droit à résister tantôt en droit à se défendre.

Cette histoire du temps présent ne peut cependant pas négliger les enseignements du temps long ni celle des prises de position pacifistes ou non de quelques-unes des organisations communautaires musulmane et juive en France, pays qui compte les plus importantes communautés islamique et israélite d’Europe sur le plan démographique.
