Islamochristiana Journal 49 (2024): “Maurice Borrmans and Mohamed Talbi: From Friendship to Rupture”

The title of this issue, “Maurice Borrmans and Mohamed Talbi: From Friendship to Rupture,” was suggested to us by a collection of articles that highlight different aspects of the relationship between these two figures who marked the recent history of Islamic-Christian dialogue and who both passed away in 2017. As the title indicates, the friendship and collaboration in dialogue between Father Borrmans (who was a professor at PISAI for many decades) and Professor Talbi eventually broke down. These articles thus shed light on the fascinating history of two eminent scholars and their devoted activity in an important phase of the history of dialogue. These essays, covering various aspects of the life and work of Borrmans and Talbi, are offered by Geneviève Gobillot, Florence Javel, Antonio Navarro Carmona, Yosra Garmi, and Rémi Caucanas, who also compiled this collection of articles with Michel Younès.

A second group of articles takes up the theme of the previous issue (Islamochristiana 48), “Christian Theological Engagement with Islam.” Contributions are offered by Sidney H. Griffith, Tobias Specker, Daniel Brown, Felix Körner, and Gavin D’Costa. The latter essay is based on the lecture the author gave at a study day organized at PISAI on October 26, 2023, in which he analyzes the articles on “Christian theological engagement with Islam” published in Islamochristiana 48.

This issue of Islamochristiana also includes articles in two other thematic sections. Martino Masolo and Rémi Caucanas provide two contributions on “Islamic-Christian Relations in History.” Finally, a section entitled “Quranic Studies” includes four articles, two offered by Joaquín Paniello, Abdullah Saeed, and two in Arabic by Moulay Ahmed Saber and Adnane Mokrani.

This volume of Islamochristiana also offers the usual section of “Notes and Documents” and a wide collection of book reviews.
