The use of the word kitab in the Qur’an and in an ancient Arabic version of the Gospels

According to A. T. Welch, the Koranic term kitab (Scripture) is one of the most difficult to interpret. This difficulty is quite evident in the translations of the Koran that we have consulted. The kitab equivalents will most often be “Scripture” in R. Blachère, “Book” in M. Hamidullah, “Book” or “Scripture” in D. Masson, “Scripture” and rare times “Book” in J. Berque. This contribution would like to provide some elements for a better definition of kitab acceptances in the Qur’an. Without being exhaustive, the approach highlights the importance of the term and its linguistic and cultural anchoring in the religious traditions that accompanied the beginnings of Islam, especially those of Judaism and Christianity.
