The Figure of Jesus in Muslim Mysticism, by Pierre Lory
Lecture given by Pierre Lory (Directeur d’études émérite at EPHE-PSL, Chair of “Muslim Mysticism”) as part of the Théologies en dialogue Chair of the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy), in Lyon, on 11 December 2024.
From the 8th century to the present day, Muslim mysticism has consistently made Jesus (ʿĪsā) a major spiritual figure: a poor and itinerant ascetic, a master of wisdom, a model of abandonment to God. This lecture retraces its main lines, showing how the Gospel figure was re-read from Qur’anic sources and then developed by Sufi authors, from al-Ghazâlî to Ibn ʿArabî.
Conférence donnée par Pierre Lory (directeur d’études émérite à l’EPHE-PSL, chaire « Mystique musulmane ») dans le cadre de la Chaire Théologies en dialogue de la Faculté de théologie de l’Université catholique de Lyon (UCLy), à Lyon, le 11 décembre 2024.
La mystique musulmane, du VIIIᵉ siècle jusqu’à nos jours, a régulièrement fait de Jésus (ʿĪsā) une figure spirituelle majeure : ascète pauvre et itinérant, maître de sagesse, modèle d’abandon à Dieu. Cette conférence en retrace les lignes de force, en montrant comment la figure évangélique a été relue à partir des sources coraniques puis développée par les auteurs soufis, d’al-Ghazâlî à Ibn ʿArabî.

منذ القرن الثامن الميلادي حتى اليوم، جعل التصوف الإسلامي من عيسى شخصية روحية بارزة: زاهداً فقيراً ومتجوّلاً، ومعلّماً للحكمة، ونموذجاً في التسليم لله. تستعيد المحاضرة الخطوط الكبرى لهذه القراءة، وتُبيّن كيف أُعيدت قراءة الشخصية الإنجيلية انطلاقاً من المصادر القرآنية، ثم طُوِّرت من قِبل مؤلّفين صوفيين من الغزالي إلى ابن عربي.
