The First Council of Nicaea (325) and the Christian-Muslim Dialogue on God’s Unity and Trinity

Abstract

Published under the original title “Das erste Konzil von Nizäa (325) und der christlich-muslimische Dialog über Gottes Einheit und Dreifaltigkeit” in issue 2/2025 of CIBEDO-Beiträge, this article by Dirk Ansorge, professor of dogmatic theology and the history of dogma at the Sankt Georgen Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology (Frankfurt), takes the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325) as an occasion to reconsider its bearing on contemporary Christian-Muslim understanding.

The author revisits the way the Nicene Creed formulated God’s unity and trinity, and brings that formulation into dialogue with the Muslim theology of divine oneness (tawḥīd) and its polemical reading of the Christian trinitarian doctrine. This theological-historical inquiry opens onto contemporary implications: what remains, in the 21st century, of the trinitarian controversy for a Christian-Muslim dialogue that refuses the mere juxtaposition of dogmas and seeks instead a shared understanding of what both traditions affirm about the one God?

Issue 2/2025 of CIBEDO-Beiträge, the leading German-language journal on Christian-Muslim dialogue, opens with an editorial devoted to Pope Francis (who died on 21 April 2025) and to the election of Leo XIV (6 May 2025), and gathers in its Studien section several contributions on Muslim-Christian marriage, interreligious dialogue and the Nicaea jubilee (including an Anglican complement by Paul Smith to Ansorge’s paper).
