The Lies of Abraham

Original title : “Le menzogne di Abramo”

Even Abraham, the first of Israel’s patriarchs and one of Islam’s prophets, lied. The peculiar account of his lie, concerning his wife presented by him as his sister, is told three times in the biblical book of Genesis and, after having been filtered by rabbinic exegesis, is to be found several times in Muslim prophetic tradition. The passage from one religious context into the other yields significant modifications in the form, in the meaning of the story.
