Community and communitarianism: terminological paths and historical fates
“Community” and “communitarianism” are generally ill-defined terms and can be used in a derogatory way. However, “community” is not synonymous with “communitarianism” and does not necessarily generate a drift. Where one builds a coherent group, the other refers to the idea of exclusivity and is perceived as a threat. In short, the two terms are clearly distinct, each having its own semantic path and historical destiny according to socio-political contexts.
“Communauté” et “communautarisme” sont des vocables généralement mal définis et peuvent être employés d’une façon péjorative. Pourtant, “communauté” n’est pas synonyme de “communautarisme” et ne génère pas nécessairement une dérive. Là où l’un construit un groupe cohérent, l’autre renvoie à l’idée de l’exclusivité et est perçu comme une menace. En définitive, les deux termes sont nettement distincts, ayant chacun son propre parcours sémantique et son destin historique selon les contextes sociopolitiques.
