The Apparition of the Concept of Person in the Beginning of Arabic Theology
Abstract
How did the concept of “person”, central to Trinitarian theology, find its words in the emerging Arabic language? In this chapter, Fr Romain Louge studies the appearance of this notion at the beginnings of Arabic theology, at the junction between the Greek philosophical heritage of the Logos and the new theological vocabulary that Christians and Muslims were then developing in Arabic.
His inquiry sheds light on how the first Arabic-speaking theologians, both Christian and Muslim, jointly forged the terms of their debates about God at the dawn of kalām.

Comment le concept de « personne », central dans la théologie trinitaire, a-t-il trouvé ses mots dans la langue arabe naissante ? Dans ce chapitre, le père Romain Louge étudie l’apparition de cette notion aux débuts de la théologie arabe, à la charnière entre l’héritage philosophique grec du Logos et le vocabulaire théologique nouveau que chrétiens et musulmans élaborent alors en arabe.
Son enquête éclaire la manière dont les premiers théologiens arabophones, chrétiens comme musulmans, ont forgé ensemble les termes de leurs débats sur Dieu, à l’aube du kalām.

كيف وجد مفهوم «الأقنوم» (الشخص)، وهو مفهوم محوريّ في اللاهوت الثالوثي، ألفاظه في اللغة العربية الناشئة؟ في هذا الفصل، يدرس الأب رومان لوج ظهور هذا المفهوم في بدايات اللاهوت العربي، عند مفترق الإرث الفلسفي اليوناني (اللوغوس) والمفردات اللاهوتية الجديدة التي كان المسيحيون والمسلمون يصوغونها آنذاك بالعربية.
ويلقي بحثه الضوء على الكيفية التي صاغ بها أوائل اللاهوتيين الناطقين بالعربية، مسيحيين ومسلمين، مصطلحات نقاشهم حول الله في فجر علم الكلام.
