The Implementation of Sharīʿa in Greece
Abstract
In this chapter of Applying Sharīʿa in the West (ed. Maurits S. Berger, Leiden University Press, 2013), Angeliki Ziaka examines Greece’s singular arrangement, long the only European Union country to recognise the application of sharīʿa to its Muslim minority in Western Thrace.
She traces its historical origins, its tensions with European human-rights law and the recent evolution of the status of muftis and religious courts.

Dans ce chapitre de l’ouvrage Applying Sharīʿa in the West (dir. Maurits S. Berger, Leiden University Press, 2013), Angeliki Ziaka examine le régime singulier de la Grèce, seul pays de l’Union européenne à avoir longtemps reconnu l’application de la charia à sa minorité musulmane de Thrace occidentale.
Elle en retrace les origines historiques, les tensions avec le droit européen des droits humains et les évolutions récentes du statut des muftis et des tribunaux religieux.
