Jean-Marc Balhan
Jean-Marc Balhan is a Belgian Jesuit (b. 1966) living in Turkey. After his initial religious formation and a Master’s degree in biology at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), he taught for two years at the College of the Holy Family (Cairo, Egypt) before studying Catholic theology at the Milltown Institute (Dublin, Ireland), then taking a licentiate in Arabic and Islamic studies at the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI, Cairo and Rome), concluded with a published dissertation on Qur’anic revelation according to al-Suyuti (Études arabes 97, PISAI, Rome, 2001).
Sent to Turkey in 2001, he studied Turkish at TÖMER (Ankara Üniversitesi) and began a doctorate in the history of science at the Sorbonne (Paris) on the reception of Darwin in Turkey, which gave rise to various publications on creationism in Turkey and the United States, before working in the service of the Catholic Church in Turkey in pastoral care, interreligious dialogue and formation. In recent years he has also studied Persian (Saadi Institute, Ankara, 2020-2021) as well as Turkish classical music and the reed flute (Neyhane, Ankara). Currently a director of formation in the Catholic Church in Turkey, he is also a visiting lecturer in Islamic studies at the Facultés Loyola Paris and one of the Jesuit Father General’s advisers on interreligious dialogue.
