Conflicts of Knowledge: The Arab World in Academic Narratives

Update, April 2026: the call for papers closed on 13 February 2026. The final colloquium programme is now available: see the programme announcement and Pluriel researchers’ contributions.

Call for papers, Université du Québec. The production of knowledge about the Arab world is shaped by a set of deep tensions — linguistic, epistemological, disciplinary, institutional, and ideological. These tensions reveal genuine conflicts of knowledge, in which competing narratives confront one another: between local intellectual heritages and dominant Western theoretical frameworks; between languages of production (Arabic, French, English) inscribed in unequal hierarchies of legitimation; between the aspiration to scientific autonomy and structural dependence on external funding.

The central aim of this colloquium is to analyse how these conflicts shape, fragment, or reconfigure the academic narratives concerning the Arab world. It seeks to bring to light not only the mechanisms of domination, invisibilisation, and exclusion that govern the circulation of knowledge, but also to explore possible pathways toward more inclusive, pluralist, and genuinely transnational humanities and social sciences — in direct resonance with the overall theme of the 93rd Acfas Congress.
