Islam and Democracy. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt

Published as Islam e democrazia. I Fratelli Musulmani in Egitto (Ananke, Turin, 2011), with a preface by Franco Cardini, this book by Paolo Gonzaga traces the history of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

Modern and contemporary Egypt cannot be fully understood without knowing the popular movement of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded in the late 1920s by a highly charismatic schoolteacher, Hassan al-Banna. Always very active in education and social work as well as politics, the movement built networks of counter-power and won the sympathy of broad sections of the population.

In revolutionary Egypt, the fall of Mubarak, to which the Brotherhood contributed, opened vast space for its action; but the end of indiscriminate repression, and thus the possibility of a more sincere internal debate, also brought all its divergences to light. New parties are emerging: will the Brotherhood maintain its formal unity, and will it be closer to the Turkish AKP or to the Palestinian Hamas?

Islam e democrazia. I Fratelli Musulmani in Egitto
