Islam in Movement. Between Reformism and Jihadism
Published as Islam in movimento. Tra riformismo e jihadismo (Ananke Lab, 2018), this book by Paolo Gonzaga explores the contemporary currents of political Islam.
Egypt’s centrality in the development of Islamic political thought is shown first by the Nahda, the Islamic renaissance, and then by the importance of the Muslim Brotherhood, not only in the country but across the Middle East. While the Nahda conveys the best of the Islamic rationalist heritage, political Islam has opened the way to two opposing currents: reformism on the one hand and, on the other, the phenomenon leading to jihadist radicalism embodied by al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Through intellectual figures and previously unpublished translations of key texts, the author highlights a new reformist era, understood as the capacity to reconcile the best of the Islamic tradition with the best of Western humanism: a concrete response to jihadist extremism, whose theoretical construction and manipulation of scripture are examined, and a path to reopen interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
Paru sous le titre Islam in movimento.
