“Le Mahomet des historiens”, by Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi and John Tolan
Two-voice lecture by Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi (Directeur d’études at EPHE-PSL, Chair of “Exegesis and Theology of Shi’i Islam”) and John Tolan (Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at Nantes Université), on the occasion of the publication of their collective volume Le Mahomet des historiens (Cerf, 2025), as part of the Théologies en dialogue Chair of the Faculty of Theology at UCLy, in Lyon, in November 2025.
How do historians around the world approach the figure of Muhammad today? The two co-editors of this monumental collective work present the state of research on sources, methods and contemporary approaches, between critical exegesis of the Muslim corpus, non-Muslim sources and auxiliary sciences (epigraphy, archaeology, numismatics).
