“Christian-Muslim Relations in the Aftermath of the Arab Spring Beyond the Polemics over ‘The Innocence of Muslims'”

In September 2012, the video “The Innocence of Muslims” sparked outrage and demonstrations in the Middle East by depicting an attack against Copts by a Muslim group, associated with the Prophet Muhammad portrayed as a ruthless killer and a pedophile. Although produced by Copts in the United States, the video paradoxically strengthened Christian-Muslim unity in the region.

Anna Hager studies the relations between Christians and Muslims in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan through this controversy. Beyond the ritual condemnations, she sees in it revealing mechanisms of intercommunal relations. Muslims, even Islamists, and Christians channeled potential violence to consolidate their ties and their own positions.

The book sheds light on the diversity of experiences and attitudes of Christians towards Islam, as well as the plural ones of Muslims towards Christians, used as political tools after the Arab Springs.
