Theology of Prophecy in Dialogue: A Jewish-Christian-Muslim Encounter

Edited by Zishan Ghaffar (University of Paderborn) and Klaus von Stosch, professor of systematic theology at the University of Bonn and member of the coordination committee of Pluriel, this collective volume explores the theology of prophecy at the crossroads of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions. Born of a trilateral dialogue between theologians and historians, the book brings together historical scholarship and comparative theology to examine how each tradition has shaped its understanding of prophecy in relation to, and at times in reaction to, the other two.

The contributors devote particular attention to Qur’anic prophetology and to the way it drew on Christian and Jewish sources from Late Antiquity while developing a theological grammar of its own. Female prophecy receives an in-depth examination, both as a historical category still insufficiently identified and as a resource for contemporary systematic theology. Several chapters then probe the stakes of a Christian hermeneutic of prophecy in dialogue with Islam and Judaism, and the relevance of a comparative theology capable of holding together confessional fidelity and openness to alterity.

Published as the fourth volume of the series Beiträge zur Koranforschung (Brill Schöningh, Paderborn), the book is available in full open access on the publisher’s website. It extends the comparative-theology dynamic carried by von Stosch and by the Zentrum für Komparative Theologie und Kulturwissenschaften (ZeKK) of Paderborn, and stands as a reference for researchers and students engaged in the theology of religions and Muslim-Christian dialogue.
