“In a troubled international context where Islam is sometimes defined as an ideological marker of many conflicts, academic research drawing on history, sociology, and political science has multiplied in Europe. While these studies have recognized value, it is nevertheless necessary to couple them with an in-depth knowledge of Islamic sources and their contemporary uses. In decline compared to the golden age of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Islamic studies are experiencing a new boom in Europe, thanks to increased funding and the creation of university positions, particularly in France. Thus, we are witnessing the rise of Islamic studies in European countries in recent years. This book provides a mapping of the various research and teaching experiences of this discipline in Europe, its dialogue with other disciplines in the humanities, and the fruitful exchanges or gaps between the field of research, administrations, and Muslim religious actors. It presents a fascinating overview of research that enhances our knowledge of ancient and contemporary Muslim religious practices.”
