For a Christian Theology of Religions

Faced with contemporary religious diversity, how can Christian theology make sense of the place that other religions occupy in God’s design? Michel Younès examines the three traditional “entry points” of the theology of religions — salvation, covenant and revelation — before proposing a new epistemological key: the principle of proportionality, borrowed from mathematical and philosophical logic.

The book unfolds in three parts. The first analyses the complex notions of salvation, covenant and revelation, tracing several currents of religious thought and their divergences. The second develops the principle of proportionality as a theological tool, showing how it can hold together the internal coherence of each tradition and the irreducible difference that separates them. The third proposes a fresh approach to interreligious dialogue, attentive to the historical depth of religions and to their cultural rootedness.

The aim is to bring together, within the same theological reflection, “divine gift and human appropriation” — moving beyond the sterile opposition between doctrinal exclusivism and interreligious relativism, and thinking a theology of religions capable of accounting for plurality without dissolving it.

Published in 2012 by Desclée de Brouwer in the “Théologie” series, the book received the Theological Book Prize awarded by the European Society for Catholic Theology (ESCT) in 2012. An Arabic edition has since appeared under the title Fī sabīl lāhūt masīḥī lil-adyān.

Michel Younès, general coordinator of Pluriel and Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy), holds doctorates in theology and philosophy. His scholarship lies at the crossroads of Islamic studies and Muslim–Christian dialogue.
