Christianity and the Qur’an: The Rise of Islam in Christian Arabia

Published on 2 September 2025 by Yale University Press, Christianity and the Qur’an: The Rise of Islam in Christian Arabia by Gabriel Said Reynolds, Crowley Professor of Islamic Studies and Theology at the University of Notre Dame, offers a revisionary account of the origins of Islam.

Against the dominant narrative that places the emergence of the Qur’an in a largely pagan setting, Reynolds argues that the text was born within a predominantly Christian culture. Drawing on recent scholarship on pre-Islamic Arabic inscriptions, he brings out the significant presence of monotheism — and of Christianity in particular — in the pre-Islamic Hijaz.

The book examines how the Qur’an engages with Christian traditions — not only those of the New Testament but also those of late antique Christian literature — casting fresh light on the religious milieu in which Islam took shape.

Christianity and the Qur’an: The Rise of Islam in Christian Arabia
