“The Momentum of Rights? Legislative Changes and Democratizing Narratives in Morocco after the ‘Arab Springs’”, by Juan Antonio Macías Amoretti and Laura Mijares
In the journal Intus-Legere Historia (2025), Juan Antonio Macías Amoretti, professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Granada, and Laura Mijares (Complutense University of Madrid) introduce a dossier on the legislative changes that followed the “Arab Springs” in Morocco.
Returning to the February 20th Movement of 2011, they show how the Moroccan regime responded to demands for democratic change with a series of legal reforms, and question the gap between the democratizing narratives on display and the logics of control that underpin them.

Revenant sur les événements du Mouvement du 20 février 2011, ils montrent comment le régime marocain a répondu aux demandes de changement démocratique par une série de réformes juridiques, et interrogent l’écart entre les récits de démocratisation affichés et les logiques de contrôle qui les sous-tendent.
