“Dámqrata. An Arabic Anthology of Democracy in North Africa”, ed. Juan Antonio Macías Amoretti

Edited by Juan Antonio Macías Amoretti, professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Granada, this volume (Dámqrata, an Arabic coinage for “democracy”) gathers and translates from Arabic a body of key texts on democracy in North Africa.

Through the voices of the agents of change as well as those who resist it, the anthology shows how contemporary Arab and Maghrebi thought, including political Islam in its various currents, has framed, debated and at times fought the democratic idea. Each text is introduced with its historical and intellectual context.
