Islam in the European Home: Towards an Interreligious Social Ethic.
Presentation by the publisher
The integration of Islam in Western European immigration countries presupposes an understanding of the fundamental issues of coexistence. The relationship between religion, the secular state and the pluralistic society is at the heart of this issue. The comparison of contemporary Muslim positions with some of the positions of Christian social ethics in this book reveals striking parallels as well as disparities. Just as Christian social ethics emerged in response to social upheavals, so Muslims in Europe are currently struggling to reconcile traditions with current challenges. The book makes clear that a purely confessional Christian social ethic, as it emerged in the 19th century, is now reaching its limits due to the pluralisation of society. Only an interreligious social ethic offers an alternative to the neutralisation of theological thought patterns in the public sphere. In particular, the confrontation with Islamic positions offers Christian social ethics the possibility of introducing into the dialogue self-critical stations of its own disciplinary history and thus contributing to an objectification of the often one-sided discourses on Islam. The book develops methodological bases for this purpose and highlights common socio-ethical fields of action for Christians and Muslims.
