Professionalising Muslim Spiritual Care in Plural Societies: Swiss and Bosnian Experiences
Published as Professionalising Muslim Spiritual Care in Plural Societies. Swiss and Bosnian Experiences (SZIG/CSIS-Studies 15, December 2025), this volume is the outcome of a collaboration between the Swiss Centre for Islam and Society (SZIG) at the University of Fribourg and the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo. The interdisciplinary team, led by Hansjörg Schmid, brings together the psychologist Aid Smajić, the Islam specialist Amira Hafner-Al Jabaji and the historian of religions Ahmet Alibašić.
Over the course of a year, the researchers observed Muslim spiritual care practices in hospitals, prisons and the armed forces, in Switzerland and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, two contexts with very different religious histories. The study shows that Muslim chaplains can contribute to professional spiritual care oriented towards individual needs: mediating between people’s spiritual expectations and institutional rules, they collaborate across confessional and professional boundaries and take into account the diversity of life paths, including the least religious ones. It thus opens up prospects for a diversity-aware understanding of European Islam.

Swiss and Bosnian Experiences (SZIG/CSIS-Studies 15, décembre 2025), ce volume est le fruit d’une collaboration entre le Centre Suisse Islam et Société (SZIG) de l’Université de Fribourg et la Faculté d’études islamiques de l’Université de Sarajevo. L’équipe interdisciplinaire, dirigée par Hansjörg Schmid, réunit le psychologue Aid Smajić, la spécialiste de l’islam Amira Hafner-Al Jabaji et l’historien des religions Ahmet Alibašić.
Pendant une année, les chercheurs ont observé les pratiques d’accompagnement spirituel musulman dans les hôpitaux, les prisons et l’armée, en Suisse et en Bosnie-Herzégovine, deux contextes aux histoires religieuses très différentes. L’étude montre que les aumôniers musulmans peuvent contribuer à un accompagnement spirituel professionnel, orienté vers les besoins individuels : médiateurs entre les attentes spirituelles des personnes et les règles institutionnelles, ils collaborent au-delà des frontières confessionnelles et professionnelles et prennent en compte la diversité des parcours, y compris les moins religieux. Elle ouvre ainsi des perspectives pour une compréhension de l’islam européen sensible à la diversité.

على مدى عام كامل، رصد الباحثون ممارسات المرافقة الروحية الإسلامية في المستشفيات والسجون والجيش، في سويسرا والبوسنة والهرسك، وهما سياقان يتمايزان كثيرًا في تاريخهما الديني. وتُظهر الدراسة أن المرشدين الروحيين المسلمين قادرون على الإسهام في مرافقة روحية مهنية موجّهة نحو الاحتياجات الفردية: فهم يتوسطون بين التطلعات الروحية للأشخاص والقواعد المؤسسية، ويتعاونون عبر الحدود المذهبية والمهنية، ويراعون تنوع المسارات الحياتية، بما فيها الأقل تديّنًا. وبذلك تفتح الدراسة آفاقًا لفهم الإسلام الأوروبي فهمًا مراعيًا للتنوع.
