In France, as in other European countries, Muslim associations offer charitable services including the distribution of food parcels to low-income families, outreach to the homeless, academic support, crime prevention in disadvantaged neighborhoods, family mediation, and the fight against violent extremism. This Muslim social action is increasingly the result of autonomous organizations that are gradually trying to emancipate themselves from the influence of transnational Islamic structures. Still relatively unknown, this social and civic engagement in the name of the Muslim religion arouses passions and questions, sometimes even equating it with a vector of radicalization. In response, the book provides a general overview of Muslim social action in Western Europe by presenting several associations and charitable projects in France, Switzerland, and Great Britain, before offering an analysis of the social, political, and religious challenges of the development of this phenomenon over the past twenty years.
