Islam and the Salvation of non- Muslims: The Qur’anic Perspective
“At the Pluriel conference on “Islam and Otherness” I will argue the Qur’an’s emphasis on divine freedom provides an opening for inclusivism. The Qur’an emphasizes God’s mercy, using al-Raḥmān as a name for God and describing him as “gentle” (al-ḥalīm), “forgiving” (al-ghafūr), “relenting” (al-tawwāb),
and “benevolent” (al-laṭīf). Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) insists (in his Fayṣal al-tafriqa) that God’s mercy surpasses human reason. In my paper, while engaging with the thought of Ghazālī, I will argue that the Qur’an
allows for the salvation of non-Muslims even beyond Ghazālī’s categories. The God of the Qur’an, who judges as He wills, is able to reach past religious boundaries to show mercy to the non-Muslim other.”
Lors du congrès de Pluriel sur le thème “Islam et altérité, Gabriel Said Reynolds défend la thèse que le Coran insiste sur le fait que la liberté donnée par Dieu ouvre une perspective inclusiviste. Le Coran souligne la grâce divine, en le nommant le “Miséricordieux”, “doux”, “bienveillant”. Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī remarque que la grâce de Dieu dépasse la raison humaine. Dans cette conférence, Gabriel Said Reynolds soutient que le Coran ouvre la voie à un salut pour les non-musulmans, au-delà de ce que Ghazali admettait. Le Dieu du Coran, qui juge comme il veut, est capable de dépasser les anciennes frontières religieuses, pour montrer sa grâce à l’autre non-musulman.
في مؤتمر Pluriel حول موضوع “الإسلام والآخر” ، دافع غابرييل سعيد رينولدز عن الفرضية القائلة بأنّ القرآن يصرّ على أنّ الحرية الممنوحة من الله تقدّمُ منظورًا دامجاً شاملاً. فالقرآن يشرح رحمة الله ويصفه بـ “الرحمن” ، و”الرحيم”، و”الرحوم”. ويشير أبو حامد الغزالي إلى أنّ رحمةَ الله تفوق العقل البشري. في هذه المحاضرة، يؤكّد غابريال سعيد رينولدز أنّ القرآن يمهّد طريق الخلاص لغير المسلمين، متجاوزاً بتصريحه هذا ما أقرّ به الغزالي. فإله القرآن، الذي يحكم كما يشاء، قادرٌ على تجاوز الحدود الدينية القديمة ليُظهر رحمته للآخر غير المسلم.
