Raja Sakrani

Raja Sakrani is a legal and cultural studies scholar. She is a senior researcher responsible for scientific coordination at the European Union’s Horizon research project “Judicial Cultures of Independence and Their Meaning for the Rule of Law Compliance: Law in Crisis”, at the University of Bonn. She holds a PhD in Law from Université Paris II (Panthéon-Assas), with a thesis on legal pluralism in the Tunisian Code of Obligations and Contracts. From 2009 to 2022, she was a scientific coordinator at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Studies “Law as Culture” in Bonn, which she accompanied from the planning stage onwards. Her research focuses on the conceptualization of law and normativity for comparative purposes within European legal systems, but also in relation to Islamic legal normativities. The question of “otherness”, living together and the accommodation of Islam in Europe are at the heart of her research activities and publications in recent years. She co-directed the international, interdisciplinary “Convivencia” programme at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (2015-2018). She has taught and conducted research at the universities of Paris-Panthéon-Assas, Bonn, Basel, New York University, Madrid, Tunis, the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati and others.
